Choosing a side
There were two roads. Build another passenger app and compete for the demand, or build the infrastructure of the people already serving that demand, with the licences, the obligations and the responsibility that come with them.
We chose the second, and not out of kindness towards the trade. Licensed passenger transport in Italy is a regulated system: the licences are issued by councils, the authorisations cannot be lent out, the service is tied to whoever answers for it. Whoever tries to go around that system spends their life in court. Whoever equips it works with the wind behind them.
Everything else comes from that, including the things we decided not to do: no fare set by us, no driver coming in without an operator answering for them, no customer becoming ours instead of belonging to whoever serves them.
