The concierge has stopped ringing. Not because you are no use.

Hotel work is the most predictable there is, and it is the first an operator stops seeing.

Today

The work you are losing

The six o’clock check-out, dinner finishing, a train to catch, the guest who comes down with two suitcases and asks the desk for a car. A few jobs at a time and a great many in a year, almost always at the same hours, almost always to the same places.

It is the most schedulable work an operator can have, and it is also the work that leaves most quietly: nobody rings you to say they have stopped ringing you.

Why you are losing it

Not over the service. Over seconds. Booking with you means dialling a number, waiting for somebody to pick up, reading it out, ringing back to find out whether the car has set off. Opening an app means none of that, and the porter has a queue at the desk.

And there is the part that does not depend on the porter: the platforms are working their way into the software the hotel runs the stay on. Once the car is booked from the in-room screen and lands on the bill, your number is no use to anybody, not even to the people who rated you.

To get it back

What it takes to get it back

An ordinary day
06:00Early check-out, airport
09:30Guest with two suitcases, station
13:00Working lunch, city centre
20:45Dinner booked by the desk
23:10Back to the hotel
None of these jobs is a surprise. The same hours, the same places, all year round: it is the most schedulable work there is, and that is exactly why it is the first that somebody else manages to take.
01

Booking faster than a phone call

The desk needs to say where and at what time, and to see straight away which car is coming. If it costs more than thirty seconds, the app wins however good you are.

02

A price the porter can quote the guest

The guest asks what it costs to get to the airport and wants a figure, not an “it depends”. A price agreed with the hotel is what lets the desk answer without ringing you.

03

A bill that does not go through the guest’s hands

The places that do this well put the car on the room bill or settle at the end of the month. Asking a guest for cash when they thought it was all included is an embarrassment that comes back to the hotel, and the hotel remembers it.

In the platform

How it works in practice

Every business has its own record, its own price list and its own way of paying, and books for itself from the browser without going through the phone room. The jobs arrive with the arrangement already applied.

A hotel that sends you a customer is putting its own reputation inside your car. It is why, once it works, it does not change supplier over a pound.
